Music for all

Since 2019, the Konzerthaus Dortmund has been has been building Germany's first major community music programme, under the motto »Music for all«. We invite international artists to perform on our stage and at the same time open up the entire city as a place where everyone is an artist themselves. Today, we run over 25 different community music and education projects – whether it’s our family workshops, inclusive community choirs and orchestras, inspiring schools projects or support for emerging community musicians, there’s a place here for everyone to discover their musical spark.

Get involved

Community Music is for everyone. You don’t need to be able to play an instrument or read music. Instruments are provided in our workshops, creating a friendly space to try things out. Here you can meet people, discover unfamiliar sounds and discover your inner talents. Whether you’re an advanced player or a newbie, a classical music fan or a hip-hop lover – everyone is welcome.

We bring music to educational institutions in the city. Workshops in daycare centres and schools spark curiosity and a joy of discovery. Young people find spaces to experiment, grow and meet artists from all over the world.

Training and networking

Community music thrives on exchange, shared inspiration and continuous development. That is why we collaborate with partners from all over Germany and create spaces where people can learn from each other and the field can continue to grow.

Our training programmes are aimed at aspiring community musicians as well as music educators, teachers and social workers. They range from one-day workshops with international guests to the Community Music certificate course, which we organise in collaboration with the Landesmusikakademie, the Hochschule Düsseldorf and the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf.

In this way, we strengthen the local scene and at the same time set an example for nationwide development, showing how community music can connect, inspire and change lives.

Award-winning

Our community music work has received numerous accolades. In 2022, the concert hall was awarded third prize in the »ZukunftsGut« award in the »Urban Space« category – recognition for its sustainable cooperation with a diverse urban community.

This was followed in 2025 by the Cultural Education Award of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. This award honours initiatives that give young people in schools, cultural venues and youth and leisure facilities access to art and culture and stimulate their curiosity.

  • What is Community Music

Community Music believes that every person has the ability and the right to make music. It encourages people of all ages and walks of life to actively engage in music-making and supports them on this journey. This creates spaces in which individuals can develop their own forms of expression – artistically, socially and culturally.

Creating music together facilitates exchange, brings different perspectives together and provides a playful experience of democracy. The focus is not solely on musical excellence, but on how music strengthens community, improves quality of life and opens up new opportunities.

There are many different approaches in the international community music landscape. We believe it is important to have an open dialogue about how we understand and want to develop community music. Our approach is only one example of how community music is practised around the world.

  • What is Community Music doing in Dortmund?

From our location in the Brückviertel district, our offerings extend to the Nordstadt district and beyond to all parts of the city. In addition to open formats that anyone can participate in, we also collaborate with institutions over longer periods of time. Long-term relationships are important to us, and we design our offerings to reflect the needs of the local community.

The connection to the concert hall remains central to this. We bring musical inspiration, melodies and artists from our institution into the projects, thus creating inspiring bridges between the stage and urban society.

  • How is Community Music represented in Germany?

Community music has its roots in England and gained prominence in the 1960s. In Germany, the approach is still relatively new, and the establishment of a dedicated community music department at a concert hall is unique to date. To further develop the field, we network nationwide, build partnerships and offer digital exchange meetings and training courses. In this way, we are helping community music to grow in Germany and reach more people.
